smtp through htaccess

I'm setting up my website to send confirmation emails for new members. But php mail() is not working. E-mail not sent. no errors, nothing.
I've been told it can be configured trought htaccess but I have no idea how to do it.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

It could be that Postfix needs to be restarted following the maintenance this morning. I'll go try that now.
