Dedicated
My work is currently considering doing remote for all our hosting, as our local internet providers just can't provide us with what we need. We are looking at the L5640, but have a few questions. Would we be able to get the machine loaded with esxi from a usb instead of an operating system? We would prefer to run the machine with esxi and run virtual servers off it for everything like we do now.

Re: Dedicated
Loading ESXi for you would not be a problem, but it might be best to use a hard drive for it. Please contact us directly through our support system and we can talk a bit more about the available options and how we can tailor a custom solution that will work for you.

SORRY FOR THE NECRO (this was the only thread i saw mentioning what i was wondering about)rustydusty1717 wrote:My work is currently considering doing remote for all our hosting, as our local internet providers just can't provide us with what we need. Rusty, were they able to provide what you were looking for? I too would like a dedi with esxi installed on a slim usb drive. We're planning to reach out and ask about multiple nics for the vswitch and ipmi access here shortly. One of our staff was told on IRC that IPMI wasn't available to the end-user which would be a deal breaker for us.
I would never perform upgrades or security configurations without ipmi access, that's ridiculous<+TimeX-NFo> We do not. Most machines have IMPI access, but it is something we reserve for ourselves in case of emergencies.
<redacted> no way for a customer to gain access to that even if they bought an additional IP dedicated for that purpose?
<+TimeX-NFo> We need to maintain control over it so that it can be relied on for machines that have it. As such, customers are not given access to IPMI.
Re: Dedicated
TimeX is correct.
I have not seen an OS that can't be remotely controlled such that updates and fixes can't be applied. IPMI has come up here mostly in the context of OS reinstalls and customers that have accidentally locked themselves out with networking-related mistakes.
I wish that these IPMI interfaces were secure and had the ability to hand out limited access. Sadly, because neither is true, we have to restrict them.
For your special network and remote-access requirements, a different colocation-centric host and your own hardware might work best.
