cs1.6 rates on win2k3 vps!
Hello.....im renting unmanaged win 2003x64 vps for cs1.6 servers. I am running 1 server atm. The server get quite full around 25 players durring day time. I have preblem setting up rates. There is choke on the server that goes up to 20. I noticed its worse when server is full. I am using all default rates and tried tic 0 and 2000. I tried setting up rates as explained on your tutorial and added the following:
sv_minrate 10000(later increased to 15000)
sv_maxrate 0
sv_maxupdaterate 100 (you mentioned to set this at least as high as the ticrate, does that mean 0 or o tic and 2000 for 2000 tic?)
sv_minupdaterate 20 (not sure about this)
sv_maxcmdrate 100
sv_mincmdrate 20
My client rates are:
rate 25000
cl_cmdrate and cl_updaterate 100
After testing the new rates choke went up 70+ for everyone. Also with deffault rates choke dissapeares when few players on server. Very confusing , not sure how to configure so i run stable 500 lag free with good reg server.

I'm not sure what guide you saw those rates in, but two of them should be adjusted:
sv_minrate 30000
sv_maxrate 0
These settings will force a high rate setting on clients. Too low of a rate is often the cause for choke.
As for sv_maxupdaterate matching tickrate, this is not the same as sys_ticrate on HL1 based games. I would recommend setting that to 100 and setting sys_ticrate to 0 or at least double what your targeted FPS is.

OK I adjusted rates as you suggested and now its 4 players on the server and i get 1-2 choke....when server gets full during the day i can imagine that the choke will go up to 70+ no doubt about this.
my rates:
sys_ticrate 0
sv_maxrate 0
sv_minrate 30000
sv_maxupdaterate 100
sv_minupdaterate 20
sv_maxcmdrate 100
sv_mincmdrate 20

It is hard to say if that will actually go up that much or not until it is tried with more players. Also, you will want to make sure all addons are disabled when testing this if the problems continue, in case one of them is throwing the results off.

ok just as i expected the server has 60 choke now with 24 players and all experiencing high choke. The addons im running is amxmodx 1.8.1 with several plugins.
Re: cs1.6 rates on win2k3 vps!
There are some other things that can cause choke, as mentioned in the KB article. What sort of server FPS are you seeing?

Re: cs1.6 rates on win2k3 vps!
Servers FPS are quite stable 450 plus minus 10% and very rearly while im in rdp they dip to 300 again very rearly.
Re: cs1.6 rates on win2k3 vps!
Are you sure that the sv_minrate 30000 and sv_maxrate 0 "took"? Please double-check them through rcon. Many times, I've seen renters have a second .cfg file that overrides the values in the server.cfg.

Re: cs1.6 rates on win2k3 vps!
Yes, i chacke with rcon. Rates are set to:
sv_minrate 30000
sv_maxrate 0
I have only 1 server.cfg file. I will be more than happy to give ftp acces or rdp for anyone(nfo staff) to check if you would like to do so. I disabled all plugins so only amxmodx is running with default plugins and choke is 3-7 for everyone at avaerage populated server.

Re: cs1.6 rates on win2k3 vps!
If the choke is 3-7, that's actually in the normal range for a large CS 1.6 server with a lot of action, because you're just hitting the built-in maximum "rate" for the game. You could lower it by restricting sv_maxupdaterate or reducing the server FPS, but a choke this low likely won't be noticeable in-game.
