Hyper-V Server 2008

Post by rustydusty1717 »

Anyone had any experience with this? I'm trying to run the core, but having issues connecting. Somehow, gotta grant myself access so I can control the host, create VM's, etc, through Hyper-V Manager on my laptop. Wanting to try out a few different virtualization software, and this is up next. Tried Xen, virtualbox, VMware Esxi, VMware Server. So far I'm liking this new windows one. Looks to be fairly lean on resources, as it's just the virtualization core of the Server 2008 OS. Anyways, the issue I'm having is granting myself access to it, through console on the host machine. Had no idea there was no GUI, was all done through console. Anyways, any help be wonderful!

Seems you have to add a user to the host server with the exact same username and password as the PC connecting through Hyper-V Manager. Not sure if I like that though.

Hyper-V is pretty good for virtualizing Windows, though it has rather severe limitations on the number of virtual cores per guest. For Linux, Xen is significantly better.

Yeah, played around with Xen a bit and it was pretty nice. Problem I'm having now is everytime I launch the Hyper-V Management program, my network on my laptop completely drops. As soon as the mmc launches, I loose connection. Reboot laptop, then it's fine again. Any ideas?

Well having another minor issue. I'm sure John will have an idea what it is, and no one else seems to have a clue. All my VM's sit perfectly at 0% idle when not in use. My new XP Pro VM will not sit at idle. Played with the HAL's and got it to sit at 1% at idle, but still frustrating how it won't sit at 0% like the rest. Originally had issues with it have access to more than 1 core, so ending up putting it on just 1 core and it's a lot better now. Currently HAL it's using is ACPI Uniprocessor PC. Like I said, it's way better now. Just sitting at idle at 1% is really frustrating. Any idea's, by all means dish them out!

I'm not familiar enough with Hyper-V to have a very good idea on that one, unfortunately =\.
