Installing OS from Virtual Drive

Post by theMCXP »

Hey guys,

New to this forum, and new to NFO :)

I have just purchased a VDS (unmanaged) package, and here is my issue.

At first, I attempted to install a GUI via " apt-get install xubuntu-desktop "
This gave me package errors, where some files may have been missing.

So I proceeded to change the /etc/apt/sources.list file, which was fine, however, now with the same install command im not even able to get any packages downloaded.

BUT that is a side note. I realised that NFO has Virtual CD-Rom drives that can be loaded with any OS in the list...

So I chose Ubuntu Server 10.4, and went through the installation process.

Now that the installation completed, I simply removed the Disk Image from the Virtual drive, and issued a server reboot, at which point, I get put into the main linux black log screen, where it asks me theMCXP Login:

No matter what I type in there, I cannot get passed that spot. I tried ' root ' with the password provided in my control panel, I tried the new user account that the ubuntu install asked me to create, nothing seems to be working, and I dont know what to do.

Any help would be really appreciated!

EDIT:
Now I can no longer access SSH or VNC... :(

The account that it had you create during the install process should apply there. It's strange to hear that it might not.

I'd recommend going back to the autoinstalled version and fixing sources.list -- it sounds like there was just a problem with it. Please post that sources.list here, and I can take a look.

Thanks for your reply!

What i ended up doing is Re-installing the server with Ubuntu 10.04...

I think the problem may have been that I installed 10.04 GUI on 10.10 base...

So I reinstalled the main system with 10.04 but instead of using the virtual cd drives, this time 'apt-get install xubuntu-desktop' worked fine. So I am up and running.

Thanks again.

Nod, makes sense. I'm glad to hear it's working now!
