Server lag with no explanation

Post by Toast »

Just brought a Vps today. Uploaded all my files and im running my game server through the vps. However i'm getting insane lag when connecting to the game server. I did only get the cheaper bundle but I've been watching the CPU and my RAM usage and my cpu hasn't spiked over 10% and my ram is sitting roughly 50%. The only thing i could possibly think is that the packet data being set from the Game server on my vps is off. Although i tweaked with that and i couldn't get much better performance. I reduced the lag from 10 seconds down to about 7.

Has anyone got any ideas about what i could do to fix this? I'm totally lost. I'll provided Extra details as required and please keep in mind that this is my first VPS so any and all information would be great.

Thanks.

What game is this, and could you describe the lag you are seeing? When you say that it changed from 10 seconds to 7 seconds, that is puzzling to me.

My friend and i are trying to run a Runescape Private server. aka RSPS. Basically it runs off a Java based server and you use an external client to connect to it externally. I believe it's kind of like A minecraft server in that sense. And we were experiencing spikes where our lag would go from 1-2 seconds (which would be considered normal for this type of game) all the way to a response time of 10 seconds. We couldn't figure out what was causing this. We tried to manipulate the packet data sent via the server and client which helped a little but every so often it would simply spike leaving us with extreme response time. It didn't seem like it was the CPU or the ram as i stated in my last post, however, I think perhaps we need a more powerful VPS. What are your thoughts?

The lag is not Bandwidth as we weren't loosing connection. It just took extremely long for the response time ingame. Say i clicked a few spaces away it would take 7-10 seconds to move but 5 minutes later it would be almost perfect.

I'm not familiar with Runescape. Does it create a lot of disk access?

Are you seeing these same types of delays in Remote Desktop? If so, we may be looking at a routing problem.

No, no delay when connecting via Remote Desktop or through the Java VCN (apart from the normal delay from using the VCN)

We had this running from my friends computer not so long ago and it wasn't getting much lag so it makes me think that it must be something to do with the performance or how our packet data is sent to and from. But just to give you an idea ill give you a photo link to the usage specs while its up and running. Its got nothing to do with location as my friend is about 20 mins away from sanjose. (which is where our VPS is being hosted from)

With those memory and CPU usage statistics, and the knowledge that your remote desktop isn't also having problems, the issue definitely isn't with VDS performance. You'll have to look at other factors here, but I'm not sure what to suggest, since I am not familiar with your game server type.
