BF3 and Managed VDS question

Post by untamed316 »

I'm not sure if this is better suited for a support ticket or not, but please let me know if it is. I am very interested in my options to host BF3 and am discussing them with a few of my admins.

I have a Windows 2003 Managed VDS that I ordered back in April that I run a couple of TF2 servers on. It is my understanding that BF3 servers need to be Windows 2008 and that I wouldn't be able to host one in my current setup.

My assumption is, that I would have to cancel my current subscription to my Win2003 VDS and order a Win2008 VDS. My question is, is there any way to keep the IPs to my current TF2 servers if I made this move? My feeling is that it isn't possible from what I think I remember hearing but I just wanted to confirm this assumption.

It kind of sucks that I missed the Win2008 standard VDS by a few months and we wouldn't have this problem but oh well. It is probably in our best interest anyway to get on Win2008 for future games and such, which is why I'm ruling out getting a standalone BF3 just for the sake of retaining TF2 IPs.

I'll just have to put together a seamless communications plan to inform as many regulars as I can of the forthcoming IP changes. 8)

We should be able to losslessly convert the managed machine to Win2k8 R2 for you by the time of the BF3 release. We are still working on the tools for this, so we can't do it quite yet.

My original question about BF3 from last month is moot now after reading about the performance testing done during the beta and I think I am going to go standalone. However, I am still interested to know if you guys have progressed on implementing the tools needed to loss-lessly upgrade my VDS to Windows 2008. I'm not in a rush to have it happen anymore but am still curious as to whether it will be possible anytime soon.
