Re: A question regarding VDS

The CPU requirements of 64-slot servers are still a big question mark right now. I'd recommend holding off on the decision until after we have better performance data, since we're not sure yet how well a 64-slot will run on a VDS.

BF3 does have some threading support, which is the main thing that we're looking to investigate for servers run on VDSes. It is possible that the lower core speeds of the VDSes would make a single-threaded 64-slot server run poorly, but a multi-threaded 64-slot may run well, and just require a larger configuration (such as the 8-HT-core option that you are considering).

I noticed you guys have some 64 man servers up today. I would be interested in knowing what your impressions are regarding the VDS. I know it's something that takes a little bit of time, so I won't be expecting an answer right away. However, as soon as you guys do figure out what works best, please let us know. Thank very much!

We're still testing this further, but we did run a test today with a server in Dallas. On a VDS placed on a physical machine with L5640 (2.26ghz) CPUs, we were able to run up to a 52-slot server without seeing performance problems. VDSes on faster machines should be able to run larger servers, and I would expect that those on our fastest boxes (based on X5675 and E3-1270 CPUs) to be able to run at 64 players.

I too am waiting patiently for word on this. I was assuming a dual core with sufficient ram and os could handle 1 single 64 player. Hope this is the case. let us know and i'll be ordering one right away! :)

I haven't been able to test further, but BF3 has its best performance when not spread across multiple cores, we know that much. Some VDSes here should be able to handle 64 players, and some not, depending on the speed of the CPU cores used for hosting that individual VDS.
