bf3 and vds suggestions

Post by sylar »

1)
can bf3 take advantage of multiple HT cores?
this is because i have a 2 core vds and off which i have
cs 1.6 servers
1 x 32 slots main pub (full/busy at nights)
1 x 32 Gunggame (4 podbots 90% empty, people only play when main is full and they get redirected to gg)
1 x 11 slots ultra.acc. scrim server (almost 100% empty)
1x 32 slots redirection server (with fakefull plugin)

all my servers have about 16 amx plugins and none of them are resource hogs (nothing such as admin esp and stuff)
cpu usuage never goes up 12%
ram is 1500 mb free at all times

according to other topics, 2 core vds might not be able to handle 64 slot server. but if i upgrade my plan to 4 cores, would bf3 utilize other cores for 64 slots?

2) i have two HT cores. is it possible to have actually ask for whole physical core instead? is there any advantage in running servers on whole physical other than 2 HT cores

3) would nfo consider putting whole physical core on sale for extra $? (one of the competitors of nfo has vdses setup like that. but i would put my money on nfo without giving a second thought)

Thanks in advance

BF3 will take advantage of multiple HT cores and a full 64 slot server will use about a full real core of an E3-1270.

Personally I would say yes with the upgrade. As a full BF3 server can become resource intensive and can either cause problems with it self or your other servers.

Two HT cores is actually one core. An HT core is somewhat difficult to fully understand but the way I think of it is a core inside of a core. There are two hyper threaded cores for each real core. So two HT cores is one real core. four HT cores is two real CPU cores.

A lot of competitors do not use HT cores like we do. We use them as it allows us to better utilize our equipment and from our testing games servers rarely need two or three full cores.
@Kraze^NFo> Juski has a very valid point

@Juski> Doesn't matter!
@Juski> You said I had a valid point! You can't take it back now! It's out there!

I would recommend purchasing a standalone BF3 server if you want to run a single 64-slot server. Most VDSes here will not be able to run 64-slot servers effectively because of the machines that they are on not being *quite* fast enough.

BF3 is only lightly multi-threaded. I recommend dedicating two HT cores for it, but most of the work will be done on one core.

I'm slightly confused. We have an 8 core VDS. I assumed this would be plenty to run BF3. Sorry I'm not very knowldgeable about this stuff. Am I very wrong about that?

Disregard, I found the answer on another thread in your sticky. We should be fine.

It's not as much about the number of cores of the VDS as it is about the architecture and clock speed of the cores. I talk about this here: http://www.nfoservers.com/forums/viewto ... =70&t=5815
