Xen is the hypervisor used for our VDSes. Normal, standalone game servers here run on bare hardware without virtualization.

There are pros and cons to each platform, but we prefer Xen for virtualization. Xen has similar levels of overhead to VMware but slightly higher performance in some ways on Windows due to its emulation of HPET. Running Linux, Xen has a performance edge because it can also run in PV mode. Xen is more flexible when it comes to creating scripts and building automated systems around, but VMware may be easier to manage "out of the box" without scripts.

To achieve a 1000fps HL1 server, any Linux version running a kernel supporting hires timers will work. I would recommend Debian Squeeze as the most mature distribution in terms of support for Xen.

HL1 based games only go to 1000 FPS. Source/OB based games used to go higher, but Valve redesigned the OB engine to make FPS not matter and locked servers to 66.67 tickrate and FPS. 2000 FPS isn't possible anymore unless it runs on the older Source engine.

If you are referring to Orangebox based games, it was removed and FPS is locked to the tickrate. This is talked about more here:

knox, if you see a company claim to offer 2000fps, then they're not reputable. This is because they're either intentionally lying, or they haven't been paying attention and seriously didn't realize that the engine changed back in October (which is very unlikely, if they have any customers for that game). In either case, you should avoid such a company like the plague.

There are lots of companies out there that have only been around for a few months and have nice-looking websites (many with language often ripped directly off our site, actually) but no actual knowledge of how to host. These can look reputable at first glance but at such a host you would have a high chance of having your server go up and down frequently, lag severely at times, become corrupted, need to have its IP changed, and/or come with terrible service. We hear so many horror stories =\.
