DayZ on a VDS?

Post by Peep »

If you haven't heard already, DayZ is a recent mod for ArmA 2 that is growing rapidly in playbase. Generally almost every server is full and the developers are desperately seeking server providers (perhaps NFO would want to get in on that).

Anyways, they have made a few quick threads specifying what you need to run a server. I've never ran an Arma 2 server before but I assume it's the same as that. Here they are though:

Below is a rough list of requirements to have a comfortable 50 player server.
* Quad Core CPU @ 3Ghz+ (CPU is the main enforcer in a ArmA server, so the more powerful the better)
* 2GB+ Ram (Ram isn't a big issue in an ArmA server, so don't be overly concerned with having copious amounts [16GB+] of it as it won't be required)
* 50GB+ HDD (Preferably SATA3 or SSD) (ArmA 2 CO and the DayZ Mod take up approx. 20GB)
* Bandwidth at least 2TB a month. (As stated earlier, at least 2TB is required)

These are pretty strange compared to most games, but I'm not sure if the CPU on my VPS is able to handle that demand. That's also really high bandwidth but I can swing it. I have a two core VDS.

Is anyone with a VDS currently hosting one of these and what is your experience? How does it preform? Since it apparently only runs on Windows and I'm using and prefer Linux I'd want to make sure it's going to run well before switching my OS over it.

Thanks.

I have seen other customers run regular ArmA2/ArmA2:OA servers (and mods of these) well on VDSes here, and I imagine that this mod should also run properly. It shouldn't be hard to meet those minimum requirements, certainly.
