SMF Issues

Post by gore »

I setup SMF on my website, http://www.notoriousgamers.org , and the entire background is white. It also says that the default background isn't right and to click the hyperlink but when I do I get an error 404. This happens with anything I press on the site. I even imported the old mySQL files I had for SMF because of my old host shutting down. All the forums are there but there's no theme or anything.

Another issue is that I have to type the link with a www. . If I put notoriousgamers.org by itself, nothing pops up. Only when I put http://www.notoriousgamers.org . Looking for tips and for what I did wrong! Thanks in advance.

When I click the "smf" folder there, it gives me an install screen. Have you started reinstaling it?

When transferring websites that have an existing domain, the DNS takes a bit of time to propagate. It is possible that you were seeing some content being pulled from the old IP.

I just wiped it completely and put it in again. I'm trying to install at the moment.

It keeps saying can't connect to database in the installation, but I'm using the database that my control panel is giving me.

Did you specifically enter your new database login details in to your SMF config?
@Kraze^NFo> Juski has a very valid point

Ok so I got the setup all good. Now if I wanted to upload the mySQL file from my previous website, how would I go through with that? Last time I did it I got the error 404 on everything I pressed. Should I redownload the old theme and simplemod for SMF , install them and THEN put in the mySQL files?

You will probably want to import the sql file and then install the mods.

Both will likely need to be done at the same time, since they will likely depend on each other. As an alternative, you could revert your old site to a standard theme instead, and then create the backup of the database so that the custom theme will not be needed immediately.

How would I revert my old site to a standard theme only using the mySQL backup I downloaded?

You would have to do that on the old site itself. If the old site is already down and all you have is the database backup, it really isn't an option unless you want to do advanced SQL table editing, which I do not recommend.
