I hear some good stuff about MariaDB + XtraDB (replacing MySQL + InnoDB).
I might consider setting it up on unamanged vds and see how it does.
The only down side is the ram usage is higher, but the rest rocks.
John, have you had any experience with this or given any tries?

I've had some experience with it and it works fine as a drop-in replacement. Ram is indeed a bit higher but it runs fine.

I haven't had a chance to put it through any rigorous testing. Just threw a few views together, but that's about it.
Response times are quick. Seems about the same as MySQL tbh.

Tried MariaDB + XTRADB and so far I like the results.
Of course with some server optimization this is working really nice.
