High Res Timer Service for Windows Servers

Post by Patriot »

For those who want to run a high resolution timer, like scrdsfpsboost.exe, as a windows service without having to buy Firedamon, there is a free option available from Brainless Technologies:

High Resolution Timer Service

Brainless also offers a good control panel for those of us who manage numerous servers on our VDS. The fully functioning base version is free, and the licensed version with additional features, like automatic server updating, costs only $25 year:

Most games do not need srcdsfpsboost.exe to run any more (CS:GO and all Orangebox games do not need it, for instance). Another free way to create a system service is to use NSSM.

Thank you, edge100x. I forgot to mention NSSM.

Unless I misunderstood something, CS:S and L4D2 servers using a tick rate unlocker do need to have a high res timer running in order to take advantage of the higher tick rates. Unlock addons override the 30 and 66 tick caps for l4d2 and CS:S, respectively, and unlock several rate cvars as well.

On my VDS, neither of those games would run at the higher rates or higher FPS without a high res timer.

L4D2 still requires that the multimedia timer be enabled to achieve higher FPS (in addition to other tools to change its internal behavior). CS:S, Orangebox games, and CS:GO enable the multimedia timer as part of their normal operations and require no external utility.

Ah hah, thanks for the clarification.

I just launched a 100-tick CS:S server after being away from that game for years. Apparently, I need to update my CS:S server admin knowledge :)
