My server doesnt show in steam list

i purchased a vds yesterday and had windows server 2008 64 bit installed along with the valve goldsrc games. im trying to run a hldm server and cant get the server to list on the steam list. i left it on all night last night figuring it may take time to lis but this morning its a no show. i can add the ip and port to my fav list and it will bring it up and i can join it but its not listed in the main steam server list. ive have reinstalled the os twice and still same thing. when i try to launch from console it says couldnt start steam service. could this be the problem and if so how can i fix it? i have disabled my firewall to see if that could be it but its not. any help would be great. thanks

Are you running a managed or unmanaged VDS? If this is on a managed VDS machine I would recommend restarting the game server a few times then waiting about 30 minutes to check. Are you using our default server.cfg or did you replace it?

first of all thankyou for a response. this is on an unmanaged vds. about a month ago i had rented a vds same set up ( except this time i have gotten 3core, last time it was a dual core) but i had canceled a week ago, all worked fine then i only had trouble about my ping but server showed and ran well for every 1 else. now after i have gotten the lag issue on my end worked out i yesterday rented another vds and havnt been able to get it to show on big list. like i said i reinstalled os 3 times now but when i run the hlds from the base folder it will not show. on the last 1 i rented it went straight to steam list no problem. im at a loss ive rented this 1 for a 3 month period and for second straight day its of no use. any idea what i could do?

I could use a query tool to see if the Master servers are aware of your server. What is the IP of the game server, and is it currently running?

The master servers are aware of your server, but it is returning "bad version", suggesting that your game version is not current.

Valve is returning "bad version" for your server: http://api.steampowered.com/ISteamApps/ ... .91.119.79. In the past, I saw this happen with a customer when Valve's master server was broken in regard to his IP, and that could be the case here (if that is true for you, then changing the IP would be the only way to fix it). I recommend running hldsupdatetool.exe with -verify_all to double-check that all your files are up-to-date, to be safe, and then proceeding with an IP adjustment if it still doesn't work: http://www.nfoservers.com/forums/viewto ... 940#p24940. hello ive just now been able to try the update tool like u said and still the server dont show. im going to contact u now directly.
