Nuclear Dawn Server

Post by Elochai »

So I seen this is on sale for 2.49 and was thinking about getting it. I thought this game was on the rental list tho.

Any reasons it not on the list no more ?

And does anyone know the specs to run a Nuclear Dawn server for a full house 32 player ?

This game has never been supported in our system, though we've considered adding it. This means that servers for it would need to be run from an unmanaged VDS/machine.

I don't know anything about its resource requirements, but someone else might be able to chime in.

Ya that why I am wondering what it would take to run as I have a 3 core VDS that managed and to switch it over to unmanaged would cost me more (Just for IP's I would want for each server) and really mess up my client for his 2 servers.

So I was wondering if the single core Linux box would run it if it turns out to be good.

So is NFO still considering to add it or has the answer came to be no. If not, what was the reason if you don't mind. It been out for a nice bit of time now and has had a few updates.

It is low on the priority list right now, because there's little interest in it.

The game has come out with dozens of updates. The frequency of the updates, and number of bugs they've fixed, has made me a bit glad that we didn't support it at the time.

Its a FPS/RTS built on the source engine, I think there is a bit of AI in it though, so the CPU requirements may be a bit higher.

I would go for the 2 core, since its on source it will probably consume 1.5 cores when full (if networking thread is separate)

Well I haven't had time to play it yet, I didn't see any info at their site either, only thing I saw about servers were offical providers and some info on Windows.

So I am hoping this is not a windows only server setup, I will have to check steam on that one.

If I did like it I think I still try the single core Linux system, It would be the only thing hosted on it, but if it don't work out, then I would have to forget about it as the 2 core $40 tag is just not in my interest for this one game right now.

I think we will see, I was thinking of A project anyway and been jumping around with the idea of a VDS for it or not. So if it didn't work out I could always use the VDS for my project.

I will think it over, but if anyone does find out the server specs for 32 players full, just let me know. Or if you run a ND server on your VDS, maybe you could tell me how it runs and what it's using up.

Thanks

Ok so I rented the single core Linux box yesterday.

Today I got the steamCMD to work and it looks like it's running fine. I can't recall alot of Linux commands so my brain must be getting old or maybe the cold getting to me .

This was my first time using steamCMD over HLDSTools. And the wiki setup page was lacking information that was needed that I found elsewhere.

This is also the first time I ever setup a game server on linux instead of windows. So all in all I think I am doing good so far. Now all I got to do is get screen working right and edit the config after I eat for the server.

If anyone here got ND, and what to test it out, The IP is 74.91.119.219, it's in the windy city .

And if anyone like to help out or give tips, im all ears.

Single Linux system runs this game with bots and 32 players without a single bit of lag. I have never seen a game run so smooth.

If your planning to do a Nuclear Dawn server, a single core Linux box here would do the trick.

I can't believe how populated my server has become in the past few days, even now as I type this, the 32 player limit is max out.

CPU is just tipping over 50% and you can't tell as it just runs fine. it also the only thing really on the box running, I wont even put apache on it to setup web admin.

:D So if you want a good ND server and know Linux then go with a single core, and if you want more then one, then you will have to move on up. If you don't know Linux or need a GUI, it may not be the best option for you. And a GUI will take away needed CPU and Memory.
