VDS vs Game Server

Post by mikedbom »

Was reading through some of the knowledgebase posts and came across this con regarding VDS's and game servers.
Don't allow you to run servers that are quite as fast as NFO's separately-sold game servers, which are guaranteed to be the fastest available and are load-balanced and tweaked to maintain high performance at all times
I'm planning to run a COD4 server (30 slot) and perhaps a BO2 server and use B3 Bot for COD4. I was also planning on using a single-core VDS at first and maybe bumping it up over time when the servers get busy. As far a server speed and lag are concerned, would this setup be sufficient or should I look into getting separate game servers instead of VDS. I understand I would have to use another rcon without VDS and we already use ModernRcon so no issues there.

Thanks.

Depending on the type of machine you are put on a single core should be able to handle a 30 slot COD4 server. I personally wouldn't run MySQL from the same box as it can have negative performance impact.

Your best bet would be to purchase a single COD4 server from us and then run the B3 bot from another unmanaged VDS.

I would recommend a 2-core for running multiple servers like this, but it should be OK. CoD4 is not terribly CPU-intensive, and the overhead of running on a VDS is not very high.

The overhead is extremely low now(used to be high 6+ months ago). I rent both a 3 core managed vds and a full dedicated server and a 30 player TF2 server uses around the same CPU(can't tell the difference).

It would be a good idea to use 1 core for each game server you plan to run(if they're populated). If MySQL ever gets locked up it will eat an entire core(my database has a problem on the web end and if I execute a specific query to list things, it puts a core at 100%).

BO2=Black Ops 2? Black ops 2 doesn't allow rented servers.

The single core will be fine for a cod4 server, but if it is full all the time mysql may interfere.
