What would you guys recommend for a 40 or 50 slot Taviana DayZ server?

I would go with no less than a 4 core, even then you may get lag.

A three core is my recommendation for a 40-50 slot DayZ server. Arma2 will use about two of those cores pretty much all of the time and the other core would be for anything else you are running on the VDS and normal OS task.

The extra ram also helps since a large DayZ server can use a pretty good amount.

Start with a 3. It will take you some time to build up to 50 players.
We have 14 dayz variation servers running on 2 dedicated servers right now with max 50 players on most. Servers never fill up so never accumulates to too many issues.
And when the player count gets higher, we turn off unused servers.

We run 16GB servers, but you will find your CPU will be used up quicker than your memory.
