Ram usage much higher on Windows than Linux

Post by IcEWoLF »

Hi guys, I noticed there is nearly 1GB difference between ram usage with Windows from Linux.

This is on a managed machine.

The only different setup I am running on windows is hyperaccel instead of ultra.

I am surprised cpu usage & ram usage is so much higher on windows.

Is there anything NFo can do to optimize this?

A good chunk of that is probably just because of the GUI for Windows. Our managed OSes are also heavily tweaked for optimization.

Just hard to believe ram usage is about 1GB more than Linux.

I'd understand 200-300mb, but this is ridiculous.

Could also be other things running. I would expect 300-400 megs of that dedicated to Windows being Windows and the rest being background services or things specific to Windows.

To get a better number you can turn off all of your servers and then in five minutes check the ram usage via the "status" page.

Here's a mostly plain 2008 R2 machine. It has the Remote Desktop Services role installed as it's a terminal server. Really isn't too bad memory wise. Like stated, a lot of the memory is the GUI. Memory consumption is similar to Ubuntu server with a GUI.

Restarted all of my servers (3) and the ram is idling at 1700 mb out of 3gb.

What is it when the servers are offline? for a CS:GO + CS:S server and whatever else you have that sounds reasonable. Remember that NFO has utilities on the managed systems that can slightly increase memory usage(not sure by how much).

When my CS:GO and CS:S and L4D2 servers are offline the ram goes back to 2400Mb.

2400MB free? 600MB at idle matches Rusty's screenshot

Here's another virtual machine. One of my main game server ones. No in any servers except HLTV and a TS3 running.

It is normal for CS:S/CS:GO/L4D2 servers to use 300-500 MB per process, at least on Windows. It is possible that the Linux kernel pages them out more aggressively to free up memory for use by the disk cache.
