/ mounted as read-only? Fresh Debian squeeze install..

Purchased a new vds for a mailserver running debian squeeze.
Seems the file-system "/" is mounted as read-only.
I am logged in as a root doing all of this.

apt-get update/upgrade gives me errors like:

E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
W: Not using locking for read only lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock

Tried to edit the fstab, wont allow me to save as its read-only. Under 'options' for "/": error-
Remount ro
Tried to remount it won't allow it as booted to it.
Tried to reboot to a virtual disk/drive so I could then remount. Wouldn't come back online
Re-install Debian Squeeze, same problem.
Anyone had this issue before? I'm no sysadmin but I know a decent amount and haven't had this problem before.
Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Did you install the system by hand instead of using our installer? The default shipping kernel in Squeeze is broken and has this problem, I believe.

If you open a support request, I can also check to see if the machine you're on is running the latest version of Xen, which may make a difference.

I installed through the installer.
I opened a ticket already about it. request #358321
