Re: Pre-Sale Question (Dedicated)
Here is some information to let you help me if i should go to a vps or dedicated.
I will be handle a gameserver which consume 200,000 k Mem Usage with over 200 users online per server. Which means that every server that i use with 200 users online on it consume 200,000 k Mem Usage, i actually have three GameServers in the same machine, its consuming a totaly of 500,000 k Mem Usage (200,000 k from two gameservers and 100,000k from the third gameserver.)
My Actual dedicated spects are:
E3-1230
16 GB Memory
500G SATA
100Mbps unmetered brandwidth
Windows Server 2003 Enterprise SP1 (which mean i dont use the entire 16 GB Ram)
SQL Server 2005 Enterprise
P.S: sqlserv.exe consume 1,110,548 K (which is a lot) im actually handling 300 users online with means that GameServers are using like 400,000 - 450,000 k mem usage.)
Im doing something wrong in my configuration? do i need a better dedicated server? or vps will be enought? Thanks.
P.S2: I want to be in atlanta since it always provide me the best ping.

Re: Pre-Sale Question (Dedicated)
Do your game servers use multiple cores? Do they use 100% of a single core instead? That is the biggest difference between the servers.
From what you said, it sounds like you would need only around 2GB of memory. If you use 2008 R2 you will get a 64 bit version and be able to use all memory you are given.
If your game servers use multiple cores, you should definitely go for the vds. However if your game server relies on powerful cores, the 1270 could be the better choice(the core speed is extremely similar).
What type of game servers are you running? a MMO style server?

Re: Pre-Sale Question (Dedicated)
Im using Two Threads Per Core for my GameServers and yes it's a MMORPG.
The problem with Windows Server 2008 R2 is that i my GameServers are from an old game, which performs better on Windows Server 2003 Enterprise SP1.
What do you recommend me, acording what i already said.

Re: Pre-Sale Question (Dedicated)
Is your license transferable as long as the IP doesn't change? How is it determined?
Are you topping out individual CPU cores in the Windows task manager?

Re: Pre-Sale Question (Dedicated)
No, license works by hardware ID, ip is just referencial for its developer to provide me constantly updates by svn.
No, i don't. (or maybe i dont know what you mean.)

Re: Pre-Sale Question (Dedicated)
If you're not topping out individual cores with that current machine (using 100% of a core), then I recommend a VDS, to give you maximum flexibility.
If the developer says "hardware ID", that just means "it's a secret, and I try to use some sort of hardware signature". You might be able to transfer the license by determining how it's doing this -- if it uses the MAC of the hardware adapter, for instance, you could clone that; if it uses the Windows SID, you could clone that.

Re: Pre-Sale Question (Dedicated)
Im not using 100% of my CPU usage, im actually at 28% (but its because sqlserv.exe consume a lot.)
Clone dont really help me, since i need to provide him the new ip to keep my svn updates avialable. Then he will notice if i cloned it.
VPS has 8 Cores?, if you say me that i wont have any problem with your vps, and it will support at least 4~5 gameservers online (of my game, MMORPG) i said before how many memory consume each gameserver with an average of people online on it.
Also, i saw that Atlanta and NYC has the same ping, but atlanta has a 10,000 Mbps Capacity while NYC has 20,000 Mbps, exactly, how it help me? i mean, what do i gain having more capacity?
Thanks.

Re: Pre-Sale Question (Dedicated)
Potentially you could suffer a larger attack while still being able to mitigate it. The capacity of the location is probably never even gotten close to under normal circumstances.
The VPS can scale up to 12 cores from any other vps package. To apply the upgrade all you need to do is pay the difference for the remaining month time and reboot the vps/vds.

Re: Pre-Sale Question (Dedicated)
A VDS sounds like a good choice for you, but as I have not run your application before, I still can't say this for certain. A VDS would allow you to upgrade or downgrade as necessary, and, depending on how the licensing works for your server, you may even be able to move the VDS between locations later on without having to reactivate it.
Either location should work well for DDoS mitigation. NYC may be a little better when it comes to the largest attacks, but those are very rare, so the general latency of your players should be a more important factor in the choice.

Re: Pre-Sale Question (Dedicated)
NYC and Atlanta give me the lowest ping, by the way there is no chance to get lower than that? i mean 130ms is good, but still high for south america. There is no way to improve it?
I can buy a Single Core VPS for 30$ and upgrade it to 6~8 cores??, if i do i will buy it, just for test 1 month, then update it the next month when im ready.

Re: Pre-Sale Question (Dedicated)
Yes you can upgrade like that random.
As for the pings, they sound about right to me, if I ever try to play on a game server in brazil 130ms is what I would expect(I live in NY)
Geographically though, it would seem like atlanta would give you a lower ping because it is physically closer to you.

Re: Pre-Sale Question (Dedicated)
Atlanta's closer, but due to the way Brazilian ISPs peer with US providers, NYC ends up being better for many -- strange, I know. I always recommend that BR customers test with both locations to see what's better for them and their players specifically, overall.
If you send us your tracert to the server and your IP, we can double-check, but 130ms sounds normal for this distance.

Your personal latency appears to be about the same to both locations.
You're also seeing high spikes throughout the path that start at your ISP's first pingable hop. You may wish to investigate these with your ISP.
