Disabling unnecessary services

Post by Brandonjjon »

Is there a way you guys could tell me what services that are safe to disable on my VDS? The only thing I run on there is a Garry's Mod server. I'm trying to squeeze all the performance I can out of the dual core VDS.

Regards,

Brandon

Disabling services can help with security, but doesn't make much of a difference in terms of CPU usage or memory usage. The big one that I recommend disabling is "lanmanserver" (the "Server" service): http://www.nfoservers.com/forums/viewto ... =46&t=4746

I've done that already actually. Is there any other way to benefit performance wise? A buddy of mine has a quad core VDS with you guys and his ping is lower. Even with more players. His is usually around 20-30. Mine is 30-40. Not much of a difference I know. Just strange. Would a quad core vs dual core be the difference here? I wouldn't think that would have anything to do with the latency. Were both in your Dallas location.

Is your latency lower when you ping his server through the command line using "ping"? If so, then we'll need to take a closer look at your routing. If not, then you may need to look at server settings, such as tickrate/FPS and rates. Using a lower sv_maxupdaterate and sv_minupdaterate on a TF2 server would cause latencies to appear lower in-game, for instance, but performance wouldn't be as smooth.

I see. I might experiment with that. But no not though a cmd ping. Just looking at it through the in game server browser.
