Well I ordered a server form NFO, which runs rather well.. I am quite happy with the performance for the most part...
But I came across a PHP/mySQL applet that I would like to run to allow the game server I am hosting to provide stats to my webserver...
The Program is called UTSTATS, (http://ut2003stats.sourceforge.net) and I have been trying to get it working.. I am not able to get the webserver to pull the stat files (small files)...
So I decided to email my usual admin (John, who is a great help) and I was told there should be no problem.. But that kind of script it against the TOS...
I was like well ok, I got the script from another host member here, who is also trying to get it to work.. Which is having the same problem as I was..
He didnt seem to care...
So I decided to read over the TOS, after he said it was against the TOS.. I read it quite carefully and I was curious as to how many people would be fit that bill..
So I opened my favorite search engine (google and Infoseek) and searched away.. I came across 6 sites (and checked URL) that were clearly against the TOS..
So what gives with the TOS, if the policy appears to be double standards?
Hopefully this rant wont cancel my server, but I thought it was rather funny...
Not a flame, but weird experience....

We enforce the TOS when we see egregious violations of it. If you notice violations of it, you can bring those to our attention, but we don't actively go searching for them.
We are generally lenient in enforcement of the TOS since we are nice guys. I was not enforcing it on you, either, as was clear from my emails to you -- I just made passing mention of the fact that what you were doing was against it. I thought it better that you should know.
We also state very clearly in the TOS that activities are permissible with prior permission from us. We don't get asked often but when we do we are very liberal about granting requests.
I'm not sure how you interpret this as a double standard. We're basically just nice to everyone.
You say this isn't a flame in the subject line, and I agree with you. So I'll move it out of flames.

That is true, You have been a great help with all my (annoying) emails
I just felt it was rather funny, and I posted it as such...
The kicker is, one of the admins for NFO is helping the renter install it and talking to the coder.. Which is just hilarious to me..
I understand that you can request such things, and if approved you can run such a script...
However I removed the script from the server (which is not a script at all, since it only updates, when manually forced too and given a update password)...
I know you probably dont actively search for violations unless a violations causes downtime or other serious problems... I know that actively searching would take most of your time
(I was an admin a 10,000+ user NT Domain)
I assume the support team is very helpful (only dealt with you
), but from how you had handled things.. I have a lot of faith in the other members, even if I dont know who they are
How I read the email was that, running such a program is against the TOS (hint hint) and I dont see why it wouldnt work...
But anyway... It didnt work, and I tried it on my local lan, and came to the conclusion there is a routing problem or configuration which is blocking the web server from accessing your private ip (game server)..
I tried it at home (over 10 computers
) between my local game server and local web, and it works flawless...

Ok, it sounds like you definitely got the wrong impression out of my email. My implication was meant to be that it's against the TOS technically but I was going to help you regardless, and that I didn't want to crack down.
In any case, we should have a firewall on the webserver and we normally do, but for some reason it's off right now. So I really don't know what would have been causing your problem.
