Unmanaged VDS game hosting problem

Post by Vulkin »

First off, I must say that you guys are very organized here, and your FAQ section is top notch!

I have rented your single core VDS.
Installed windows Server 2012 on it.
Did everything I read in the security post.
Tried HPET enabled and disabled-same problem.
I host 1 instance of Novalogic Delta Force Extreme 2 (released in 2009),with the /serveonly extension.
-Separate account than what I game with.
The missions have been hosted successfully through a different company.(to eliminate those to be a problem) I have used dedicated servers before, this is my first VDS.
Other than the time being off by 6 hours daily, this runs like a raped ape.

Problem:
The game keeps kicking off. It may run over night without an issue. It may run good with 20+ players for a few hours, but always kicks.

I connect through RD or VNC and restart the game server with 1 mission. It will kick two or three times in a row before being stable enough to load the missions through PHPRat, (wolfrat kills it instantly). It may kick after all the missions are loaded then too. It sometimes kicks again after one mission.
Sitting idle, the memory usage is at 65-67%.

So my questions are, should I be using a different OS?
Should I add more memory?
Should I be using the 2 core VDS?

Any help will be greatly appreciated so a BIG THANK YOU in advance.

Let me first say I am newb at most of these things. However running 2012 with only 1gb of ram assuming you did not upgrade is probably not enough. I had 1gb of ram for a server i run and normally that would be enough for a low end game but i noticed a couple times it would spike and the server exe would quit running. I think this is some sort of safety feature so vital components still have ram to operate. It is only 5 dollars for for another gb of ram, I would suggest this may solve the issue...

I took your advice and memory usage with game running is now at 38%.

I thank you!

I'll post if this solved the issue.

Please also contact us directly about the time issue and we can issue a reboot of the machine to fix it (http://www.nfoservers.com/forums/viewto ... =47&t=7879).

If I were you, I would stick to win 2008 R2, I think NFO recommended sticking with 2008 R2 unless you have a specific need for 2012.

I prefer the interface for Windows 2008 R2 myself and have not found any compelling reason to switch to 2012 in terms of other factors (performance, stability, and so on). I've heard some reports that 2012 is actually a bit less stable, as well, possibly because the Xen drivers aren't quite compatible and/or new OS components are less mature.

UPDATE:

Upgrading to two GB of memory solved my issues.
I tried 2008RC, but for my game, a video card was required as expected-used this on several dedicated servers and had to have a video card.
I reinstalled 2012 again and all is well.
I can run two 64 slot servers without any issues.

I have to give kudos again to NFO.
Over the years, I have paid a car payments worth each month for dedicated servers.
I have used:
TWEB
Primary Target
Art Of War
WYD
Game Monsters
Ultimate Game Servers

This VDS here, has run circles around any of the above.
It's fast and reliable. Hell, I can even eat three times a day after paying for it.
The FAQ and Forums are outstanding on the info.
To top it all off, people actually reply to the forum posts with good answers and not BS.

KUDOS and keep up the good work!

I kindly thank you!

Thank you for the update and kind words. It is interesting to know that the game works on 2012 but not 2008 R2 because of a video requirement -- I'll keep that in mind for other games.
