What do I need?

Post by MrMackeyMKayyy »

Alright so I am very new to Virtual Servers and I am trying to find out what option is best for me that NFO offers. I purchased a server from Vilayer due to their prices but ended up realizing that I have no idea how to operate a linux based VDS. I will be using a windows OS so I can have a GUI.

What am I planning on doing? I plan on running a teamspeak 3 NPL server off of the VDS which I will be capping at 100 users (I would expect 30 users max at one time for the time being). I will also be hosting a single Garry's Mod DarkRP server which I would like to be able to host 32 players off of. *Optional* Running my website off of the server as well, (if this requires more than I would need for the previous two then exclude this option).

What Do I Need? I have no unearthly idea what I need to be able to run these two thing, which VDS package would you think that I would need to be able to do all of this?

I really appreciate any help at all! I am very new to this and would like to learn the ropes and be able to host servers and maintain a community.

It sounds like a two core VDS would do you well. The Teamspeak server and website won't take up a lot of resources but the 32 slot Garrysmod server can.

I would personally recommend doing a single core and placing the Gmod server on that then just ordering our $2.99 web hosting and an additional TS server on top of that.

I just saw the website hosting a little while ago and I will be using that separately. I think I may do the two core unless you think I would be able to get away with hosting a Teamspeak and a Gmod server on a single core.

The TS server won't take up really any resources. The garrysmod server should be OK on a single core but you'll want to watch usage closely. If you notice usage going and staying above 50% you may need to upgrade to help a little bit.

Depending on your planned tickrate, I would go for a 2 core, it isn't much more expensive and it will allow room for OS servies or unplanned usage. Srcds can also use a 2nd core for its networking thread and it might be a good idea to let windows manage those 2 threads across 2 cores. I would recommend around a 33 tickrate for a 32 slot RP server.

Good Luck!
