Thinking of Switching

Post by Madhavok »

I would like some input from some of the community here. I saw that the price on the single core VDS is down to $10, and I have been doing a lot of research as to whether or not I should move my 16 slot CS:S server to one. It's cheaper for one, and for two I can possible squeeze two small servers out of it.

My question to everyone is, is it worth the extra few dollars to be limited to game slots and have game server support? I know the server will out perform the VDS, but I was wondering if others had luck doing something similar.

Remember moving to an unmanaged vds will mean you lose your IPs for your currently shared game servers.

If you have little Linux knowledge, don't switch unless you plan on learning a lot.

Ultimately, it depends on what you know. If you have been running servers for years, and are confident in your ability to install/manage a server on linux, go for it! Otherwise stick with shared for now :)

I can say with confidence you will notice no performance difference on a 16 slot server shared vs vds. The vds performance impacts only occur when you are maxing out a core(happens at around ~40 people on a CS:S server).

So I went for it, and failed miserably, and for the time I am sticking to a shared game server. I tried following the instructions to install the server on Linux, but I couldn't get it. I was wondering if the installs on Windows were any easier, or if there is another way to install them?

They are easier since you have a GUI to work with, but there are still steps involved to make them work properly. It should be considerably easier, though.

So there is a way to get to a "desktop" instead of just the text based terminal?

Ubuntu has a GUI which you can enable. I don't remember the specific command to enable it but a quick Google search should reveal that.

To Google and YouTube it is, with a little testing by dual booting my pc with Linux. Thanks a lot! :-) There may be hope for me yet.

The GUI on a single core vds would not be a good option IMO. Navigating it takes up lots of CPU and running it takes a decent amount of memory(not a big deal when you have a lot, but when you only have 1GB to work with...)

Windows is definitely easier if you are familiar with windows, and you can do test set-ups on your home windows PC and the process should be about the same.

But, I don't recommend running a GUI on Linux, due to its overhead.
