Opening port on a VPS

Post by Konth »

Hello,

I've installed a garrysmod server lately on the VPS, and I've noticed that the server is not showing up on the in-game browser( so players can not join unless joined before or if given the ip ).
I've also read that port 26901 is responsible for making the server showing up on the master list. So I've check trough canyouseemee.org, and it said the port was closed so I think it might be the problem. How would I open that port on the VPS? ( windows server 2012 ).

Cheers.

We don't block any ports by default on our end, other than port 25 for SMTP. Have you tried testing with Windows Firewall turned off?

Yeah, it's off by default.
I guess it's not the port then, but for some reason no-one can see the server in the browser :?

The in-game browser seems to be broken right now, as several people have recently said that their servers show up in the regular browser but not the in-game browser. We have not yet found a workaround for this -- it seems to be on Valve's end somehow -- but we're still investigating.

One thing that I noticed tonight is that the latest gmod version (http://www.garrysmod.com/2013/12/05/13-12-05/) is not being distributed to servers, only to clients. For this reason, anyone using SteamCMD and appid 4020 (including us) does not have the latest version.

I'm working on rolling out the latest files from the client distribution to our managed clients. My test server shows in the browser even running the old version, though.

Edit: The new version doesn't work on servers (it crashes at start), which may be why they didn't push it out to servers. For those seeing the browser problem, you might try copying garrysmod.ver from your client to the server as a test.

If all the garry's mod server are then using the same version, why so many servers you provide don't show on the list but ALL other provider's [over 6 other servers I have checked and all showed on the list] servers show on the list?

When looking from http://www.game-monitor.com/ I cannot see my server even it's running but when I look any other server, they are there.
My server's ip: http://www.game-monitor.com/search.php? ... 186.250.95
Other server's ip: http://www.game-monitor.com/search.php? ... .39.75.123
http://www.game-monitor.com/search.php? ... 54.240.105

repe, keep in mind that we are the most popular Garrysmod host in the US and most of the servers that I see customers hosting here also show up in the list. I've heard three complaints so far from customers who are having the problem that you are having, and I'm trying to help these customers. One troubleshooting step involves trying the different garrysmod.ver file.

There is definitely a problem for those customers and it is definitely with the game or Steam. The question is, what workaround might apply.

The version of garrysmod that we run here right now is the latest server release. The latest server release is an optional one, so many servers actually run an earlier version.

Could it be that managed VPS works and un-managed VPS doesn't?

repe, one of the customers that reported this was on a regular standalone server, so that doesn't seem to be the case. Unfortunately, he reported it over the weekend and cancelled right away, before I could fully investigate.

Would be nice to get this fixed as we who's servers have this problem, our servers are kinda useless if they are meant to be public servers. My server that used to have about 40 players peak everyday is now peaking under 10 players everyday because no new players join.

I think its possible that this problem has been longer than just these couple of weeks, as my servers started losing players right after I started hosting it on nfo... - 2 months ago.

I really think it's a problem we customers can't fix, it's something to do with port-forwarding or something like that.

I really think you guys aren't being patient enough regarding letting your server show up in browser. Like I said in the OPs other thread, it showed up fine for me. I have nothing out of the ordinary applied to my GMOD. My TTT server(managed windows) didn't show up once, and it did the next time I tried.

EDIT: Image

It was not on the original list because it didn't have enough players, once I filtered by name it showed up fine.

Me and my friends still don't see the server and same goes for the:
http://www.game-monitor.com/search.php? ... 186.250.95

Could this problem have something to do with the fact that your from usa?

My server is hosted in Germany.

Other my servers that are hosted somewhere else do show up to me and my friends and on the game-monitor:
