Setting up DNS for an IP instead of using nameservers?

Post by underclocked »

If my registrar wants me to use an IP instead of a nameserver for my web hosting do I just use the direct IP of ns1.nfoservers.com or is there a specific IP/port that needs to be used?

I just put in the DNS request an hour ago so it is possible that it hasn't updated yet, but I added the direct IP and it will not let me add the domain in my domain manager.

I'm not sure why they'd want you to use the IP since it's standard to use the name servers, but the direct IP would work as well. DNS propagation can take some time. Generally it's only 1-3 hours, but can take up to 48 in rare cases.

Creating a DNS record to point webhosting to my server but keep e-mail on the current server.

This still isn't working. I am attempting to create an A Record to point to the IP of my web hosting on the nfo servers. I tried entering 206.253.195.193 as the nameserver IP, but it will not let me add the domain in the domain manager.

I am trying to point only the webhosting to my nfo account(not the e-mail) so I cannot use the regular nameserver(ns1.nfoservers.com, etc).

Am I using the wrong IP for the server, or is there something else I am doing wrong?

Thanks in advance.

Have you considered just using our nameservers like normal, and using your previous provider MX records with us?

If you are trying to use a separate DNS service and an "A" record pointing to your webhosting machine and hoping that it will serve the contents of your folder, that will not work, because there is more setting up a vhost than that. We can only support using our control panel and name servers for webhosting at this time.
