So I have a stupid question.

This is used for general discussion that is not necessarily server-related.

So I have a stupid question.

Post by TacTicToe »

How is it if you order a "less popular" server, it can take up to 1 day to create?

Since NFO has things automated via scripts, this makes no sense. I ordered a Wolfenstein 2009 server, it was up and running almost instantly. Now that is a less popular game. Only server running for it is on our VDS now.

I order a server for Homefront, it is stuck on "Creating" and I am told it can take up to a day? Game is installed via Steam. Takes me less than 5 mins to download it and install it on my VDS, but takes a day if it is a pay per slot server?

Why is this?

This is due to less popular game types not having their files out within our network, so the process of getting the server up must be triggered manually and watched to confirm it succeeds.

@Juski> You said I had a valid point! You can't take it back now! It's out there!

If NFO has no machines with the game install available, it will need to be installed onto a machine and then your server can be created. From my experience, this is a queued process, so if there are other things in the queue above you, it will take longer than usual.

EDIT: kraze explains it better

Ok. The queue thing makes more sense. I guess I got a little spoiled with every thing happening so quickly with NFO, that I did not expect to hear it could take up to a day to install a server! :)

Each game is designated to run on certain machines based on the game's needs (some need faster CPUs, or more memory, or more hard drive space, or special libraries/settings). If a location does not have a designated machine yet for a game, I have to pick it and transfer the files to that machine before it can be created. This does not come up very often, since most games have been deployed to most locations already, and most games run fine on any type of machine, because we build beefy machines.

Very unusual games also have creations that are a little less likely to succeed. If an auto-creation fails, it needs to be looked at manually, which adds time to the setup.

Thank you for that reply, John. Makes sense. Basically this was a last ditch effort test server I am setting up. Seems (most) USA IP's are not showing up in Homefront's server browser. I bought as small a package as I could, in case it does not work, and I end up having to cancel. I can confirm that Atlanta and Chicago definitely do not appear. Canada, Brazil, and EU servers do appear

Now, if it does work, I will want to add additional slots to this server. Would that happen immediately, since the game files will be there? It wont be a matter of another install, just increase in slot size.

Yes, that would happen immediately. After it's set up and working, new servers can be created, it can be adjusted, and so on.

I have been having difficulty getting it to come online, though.

Yea I got an email saying there was a server restart and to check my events log. But there is literally nothing there in my control panel. Free website for the server is online and working.

Figures it takes a game like Homefront to stump John.

Do you need my command line? This is what I use in my FireDaemon.

Code: Select all

SERVER ?maxplayers=32 -queryport=27015 -authport=8766 -rconport1=27010 -rconport2=27011 -configsubdir=DedicatedProfile_tkc

No.

The problem turned out to be that the game was distributing invalid Steam binaries.
