Upgrading Game Server to VPS

Post by wolfgang959 »

Hi everyone,

So im planning on upgrading my current package with NFO, from hosted gmod game server to a VPS server and have a few questions. Im going to go with the 2 core setup at first for a custom TTT server and soon after a Prophunt and HL2RP gamemodes.

1. Would it be best to upgrade my current package to the vps, or setup the vps first then upgrade? i am kind of confused after reading through the knowledge base (i want to keep the server down time to a minimum)

2. If i do upgrade are my files transferred? (im assuming this is a no, its not an issue to just copy the garrysmod folder over to the new)

3. Is it possible for me to keep the same server ip address? (i don't want to loose regular players)

4. Finally ive noticed once my server reaches around 19-20 player capacity the lag suddenly increases massively on my current hosted server (i have checked all addons and thats not the issue), im hoping the vps will stop this from happening, will this be the case?

Thanks for your time Wolfgang959.

P.s. I really enjoy being hosted with you you offer a great service far greater than my last host that kept pulling my hard drive out without warning multiple times a week.

1. Probably set up the VPS, and then transfer files over after. It would be best to wait until the end of your billing period for your game server so you don't lose any already paid time.

2. They can be only if you go with a managed VDS(minimum 4 core).

3. Only with a managed VDS.

4. Performance would be slightly worse on a VDS due to virtualization. If you are current experience performance issues you should open a ticket or a thread immediately. NFO hosts on the fastest hardware and performance is one of the top priorities. If you are having lag issues, you would definitely want it looked it.

Here are the instructions for moving a normal game server to a managed VDS: http://www.nfoservers.com/forums/viewto ... =51&t=8024

thanks for replying that's a shame about the ip, im guessing they have set ip ranges for the different services, i got confused as i had seen that thread you posted before and thought that well i am going to stay on the Frankfurt server this would apply
- Your IP will not change unless you select a different location
.

okay and if thats the case that the VDS/VPS runs slightly worse than hosted ill drop the server slots down to 20, do you reckon the 2 core VDs will be enough for at least 2 gmod servers running on it?

also which OS is recommended for gmod? ive herd that its windows 2008R2 without the GUI but some say 2003, ino there are less problems with gmod on windows than linux (well atleast that used to be the case, alot of information i find is outdated around the 2009/10 years)

thanks for your time.

Keeping your IP applies when moving to a managed service, detailed here: http://www.nfoservers.com/forums/viewto ... =90&t=3898

The recommended OS is still 2008R2 for GMOD. The usual estimate for the best performance is a core per game server+1. So ideally you would want a 3-core, but if your GMOD servers are around 20 slots, they should not be maxing out cores, so you may be fine. After you purchase the 2-core VDS, if you realize you need more power you can always upgrade without losing your IP or any data(as long as you stay in the same location). The upgrade will only cost you for the days remaining in your subscription.
