Unable to set up Rust server

Post by neck »

Hi, I apologize if this is in the wrong section but it seemed to be the most applicable one.

I read through the other "Rust setup" thread but nobody seemed to be having the issue I'm having so I thought it'd be better to make my own.

I'm using a VDS w/ Ubuntu 12.04-LTS.

I am pretty new to linux so this could be something I'm doing incorrectly, but I'm not sure. I got my TeamSpeak server working properly, so I must at least somewhat know what I'm doing

I added a user "steam" and followed Valve's instructions on downloading SteamCMD (super simple)

I then ran steamcmd (./steamcmd.sh), logged in as an anonymous user (login anonymous), and set my install directory (force_install_dir PATH:\SteamCMD\rust_server\ ... this is probably the part I screwed up on, but I'm not sure.)

Now I tried downloading the rust dedicated server
app_update 258550 -beta development validate

and I get this screen
Image

nothing actually downloads, it just immediately displays that my server has been updated successfully.

ANY help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Try using Run app_update 258550 -beta experimental. This should download both the experimental version and the legacy version.

I forgot to mention that this is what I originally tried because that's what is listed in this documentation, however I made a post on the subreddit for rust and was informed that they had switched the branch to "development" instead of "experimental".

Both do the exact same thing though, instantly telling me that it has been successfully updated without downloading anything at all.

Do you own Rust? If so, try using your steam login and see if that works.

Still gives me the exact same issue. :?

I sent a ticket to Steam support asking about it, but it will probably be several days before they respond and even then there is no guarantee they will be of help.

If anyone has any other ideas please let me know.

I just tried removing the steam user + directory and doing everything from the beginning but still ended up with the same problem.

not sure if its too helpful but it seems its creating the install directory, it just doesn't actually install anything.

http://i.imgur.com/wBtPVfs.png (removed image tags because it was too wide for the page)

it created my rust_server directory and created a few empty folders within, but no game files.

Also I'm sure there is probably a more efficient way of viewing folder structures, but like I said I'm a linux newbie

Id say the problem is Steams side and not your side.

The app id for rust downloads nothing.

Linux is great - nice community . If your after more of a gui look at webmin.

I'm liking linux so far and currently haven't had any issues using just the commands, but I'll look into that in the future.

Hopefully it is on Steam's side and they correct it after seeing my ticket.

This is definitely very odd..I remember dealing with another community member who was having a similar issue where Rust just wouldn't download. So far I've been unable to duplicate the results. I imagine it's possible that Linux is at play here. Have you tried pulling the files on your home computer to see if it works?

I just tried this out and it seems to work fine on my computer, however I am running Windows on my home PC, not Linux. Right now I'm just kinda hoping for the best with Steam support, as I've tried every solution I could find while googling the issue, and tried redoing the entire SteamCMD install multiple times.

Many of the larger Rust servers run on Linux I believe, so it clearly isn't happening to everyone on Linux... I just have no idea what could be causing the issue other than something on Steam's side.
