Question regarding sourcebans and IP's/ports on my VDS

Post by Jerpy »

I am aware that by default, no ports are 'blocked' on NFO's servers. What I am asking in this question is if it has to do something with how my set up is on the machine, because something is incorrect.

Webhost:
So basically, by default you'd have to make a ticket to have my webhost open a port. It's inconvenient, but whatever - its how they run. They have opened it since, and even disabled the firewall temporarily for it and continued to receive the same error. This confirmed that it was something on my gameservers side, as beforehand sourcebans always worked on my old servers when it was opened to them. I can change back and forth from my old servers (that are still up, for now) and my new one (the VDS I have), and it will show that just the VDS is unsuccessful. They aren't one of those webhosts that say they opened the port and didn't really; as like I said, it's pretty much confirmed at this point that they did.

NFO:
I know like I said, NFO does not block any by default but I need to know if I am supposed to set up or add a special rule concerning each IP address I have for my 3 game servers.

Sourcebans is entirely set up correctly, as I had it working before. Technically, it still works 100% but the fact the webpanel says 'error connecting' to just display the server info is kinda annoying looking.

If it matters, what is having an issue connecting is stated in a debug page I have. The page is a basic php script and it has a set server go through a checklist. Here is what a majority of the page looks like.

[+] Trying to establish UDP connection
[+] UDP connection successful!
[+] Trying to write to the socket
[+] Successfully requested server info. (That doesn't mean anything on an UDP stream.) Reading...
[-] Error getting server info. Can't read from UDP stream. Port is possibly blocked.

[+] Trying to establish TCP connection
[+] TCP connection successful!
[+] Trying to write to TCP socket and authenticate via rcon
[+] Successfully sent authentication request. Reading...
[+] Got an response!
[+] Password correct!

So as you can see, it's just a UDP error and stating that it's possibly the port.
Hope I've provided enough information for any of you to help, thanks.

I don't remember if I asked you this, but make sure the web server is not IP banned. This can happen if you make a couple failed queries to the server with the wrong rcon password.

You can check on the server using a tool like HLSW, or using the rcon tool on the "Server status" page, type listip.

The IP address you would be looking for is your webhosts.

Do websites that query your game server work, like gametracker.com?

Are your servers managed, or unmanaged?

Well thats the thing about why I mentioned in my first post, it succeeds on the same host but with our old servers, which is why it would have to do something with NFO. Here is what I get when I change the debug to the old server.

[+] Trying to establish UDP connection
[+] UDP connection successfull!
[+] Trying to write to the socket
[+] Successfully requested server info. (That doesn't mean anything on an UDP stream.) Reading...
[+] Got an response! Server: [pG]'s 24/7 TTT - JOIN AND GET REROUTED TO OUR NEW SERVER

[+] Trying to establish TCP connection
[+] TCP connection successfull!
[+] Trying to write to TCP socket and authenticate via rcon
[+] Successfully sent authentication request. Reading...
[+] Got an response!
[+] Password correct!

Right, what about the debug page pointed toward your NFO servers but on a different webhost?

If the server responds to gametracker, that's your proof that everything is configured properly on the game server side.

I'll setup a quick free host account and put the debug on there. I don't know about them and ports, though. I'll report back when its up and ready to view

edit: I should add, interestingly enough - When I was adding a ban earlier via webpanel and it was scanning for the player on the servers to kick them; all 3 names came up perfectly when adding the ban. No errors or anything. I'm not sure how that would happen since I would think that page and the homepage would respond the same way.

Most free webhosts will have the ports blocked. If you want to add me on steam I can upload it to the dedi I have hosting my website, or if you have any NFO web hosting, that would work too.

Just as a quick update to this, the problem wasn't anything on NFO's end. Moving the debug script that Jerpy was using to my web server queried the game server fine :)
