How would my server performance increase?

Post by Datsun »

I'm currently running a Garrys Mod DarkRP Server on DigitalOcean with 1gb of memory, and 1 core.
I experience awful lag when the server is under load, around 15 players and I have 24 slots.
I'm looking to update to NFOServers, however I have a question about the VPS you offer.
What is the speed of the CPU I would be getting if I chose the Single Core option?

I would expect a decent performance increase. You'll find just about all VPS providers run their servers on lower-end hardware and heavily oversubscribe them. Here we don't do that. We only run the fastest Intel machines on the market and with our use of Xen we're able to dedicate all resources to you. Since we use a wide variety of machines internally, it would not be possible to give you a clock rate.
@Kraze^NFo> Juski has a very valid point

@Juski> You said I had a valid point! You can't take it back now! It's out there!

Digitalocean isn't made for gaming, NFO is. It is more cost-effective and efficient to use extremely high core count, but low clock speed CPUs for the workloads Digitalocean usually handles(mostly small websites). Chances are you are on a ~2.0Ghz Xeon CPU currently, and since source engine servers can actually benefit SLIGHTLY from 2 cores, moving to NFO you should see a significant performance increase. On the 2-core Linux plan here, you can probably host up to a full 40 slot DarkRP server with the right settings.

Do you reckon if a 24 darkrp server will work fine on a single core? Specifically under load (lets say 20 players).

Yes a single core should be able to handle a 24 slot DarkRP just fine.

Last question..
How exactly would the transfer process go?
Do I simply install the steam server client along with garrys mod and simply move all the folders and files from my old vps?

Yep that's about it! You should only need to change your startup command line if you have an IP specified. Also try not to copy the core server files, only extra/custom content.
