You can only set DNS records if you have a web hosting package here as far as I know. If you purchase a web hosting package(the cheapest one will do) you can then set an A record to point to your VDS IP.
Thing is, I already have an NFO linux VDS server where my websites are running, and I do not want to order another service package just for the A records - DNS and such are not my forte, so I'd appreciate it if anyone can explain me what I'm supposed to do after pointing my domain's nameservers to ns1.nfoservers.com - my registrar do actually allow me to set A records, but only through support tickets, so I'd like to know if there's another way to go about this. (Is an A record really necessary after pointing my domain to the nfo name servers?)

You are telling your domain registrar to ask NFO's nameservers for your DNS records. You cannot set DNS records without a webhosting package. You can pay for DNS hosting at various places, but most domain registrars will offer it for free. Your best option would be to open a ticket to get DNS records added.
The only service where we manage DNS for your TLD is with webhosting. On an unmanaged DNS, you can create your own nameservers and manage your own DNS manually, or set an A record with your registrar's website that points the domain to your VDS. Generally, you'll want to set an A record for the "@" (Wildcard) subdomain and the www subdomain.
