Managed VDS Questions

Post by blackhawk74 »

I currently help manage a VDS with several CS:GO instances through NFO, but the gaming community I run the servers for is looking to go in a different direction, so I decided instead of breaking up the existing community, I would rent my own managed VDS and take over the servers personally.

That being said, I have a few questions:

1. Right now I'm not privy of the specs of our current VDS, but we currently have 4 main instances of CS:GO running: 3 that have 32 slots and one with 16. 1 instance is always full, 2 usually sit around 8-12 players, and the other one can be completely full or empty all day. My (probably most important) question: How many instances of CS:GO can I reliably run without seeing poor performance on the standard quad core managed VDS package? I know this is a broad question because it all depends on mods, but I'm just looking for a ballpark answer. I have no idea if the VDS can only take 1-2 instances or 7-8.

2. Is there an additional fee for every game instance that is added to a managed VDS?

3. If at some point I wish to upgrade the machine (whether it be memory or CPU) is there an additional fee to this as well?

I think that's about all of my questions for now, thanks in advance!

That's difficult to pin point since size, tickrate, configuration and OS will all play a role, but a general safe estimate is 1-2 servers per HT core. Though, you should always plan for overhead and to maintain CPU usage at or below 50% for best performance.

Most games do not require an additional fee, but some games do. viewtopic.php?f=51&t=5705

There is no fee for upgrading, but it will cost money to actually upgrade the VDS to the next highest package.
@Kraze^NFo> Juski has a very valid point
@Juski> Got my new signature, thanks!
@Kraze^NFo> Out of context!
@Juski> Doesn't matter!
@Juski> You said I had a valid point! You can't take it back now! It's out there!
