Apache webserver keeps crashing

Post by afrs »

Apache keeps crashing on me. I've checked the running processes with ps -aux and I've also checked the apache error logs. The error logs were saying: server reached MaxRequestWorkers setting, consider raising the MaxRequestWorkers setting

However I've already increased the setting greatly in the config files (currently at 256, surely more than enough?) and not sure if I should keep increasing due to the fact I still can't determine whether it's some form of attack on the webserver or the website geniunely needs the resources. I've also now hooked the website up to cloudflare in hopes that it filters some of the bad traffic if there is any.

Nothing I've done so far has come to much avail and I was hoping someone else might be able to take a look for me or have any suggestions?

I'm literally stumped as I cannot seem to get around this.

Note: Once I increased the MaxRequestsWorkers from 150 to 256, the website went back to normal and was at it's usual high-speed, but after a few minutes again it went back to being non-responsive and "down".

Thanks in advance

Check your Apache access log, it will show you if anyone is attacking your web server. You can post them here for people to analyze if you are unsure what to look for.

I warn you it's very big already, despite only being back up on this new hosting for 24 hours.

Noticed some strange traffic from these two IPs:

104.153.105.132 (A NFO VDS)

23.226.236.212(A Ramnode VPS)

If you don't know these IPs you can safely block them in your control panel firewall.
