Rust Virtual Server
Hello everyone,
I am looking at renting a Virtual Server to host a modded Rust Experimental Server.
I am looking to run 100 player slots on a 4x gather rate.
I was looking at this package from NFO:
Six core
Six full, dedicated HT CPU cores (Nehalem or better)
6144 MB of RAM
600 GB of RAID-protected storage
24000 GB of bandwidth transfer
Would that be sufficient? What if I added 4GB more ram to the server?
Thanks,
Bill

Re: Rust Virtual Server
With the additional 4 gigs of RAM, should be more than enough.
Re: Rust Virtual Server
I'd actually recommend you go with something smaller. That VDS is a bit overkill. Try looking at our three core option with extra ram.

Re: Rust Virtual Server
I would discourage using a VDS with a Rust server. My server attempted to upgrade to a VDS (the same package as yours), and we found performance to be worse than our game server. It wasn't that NFO offers a bad product or that the VDS didn't have enough resources to run the server. Rust servers only use one core to run currently and are very poorly optimized.
I'd suggest upgrading to a Rust game server that has 6GB of RAM rather than use a VDS. Way better single core performance.

Re: Rust Virtual Server
A standalone server in our system or one on a full dedicated machine will always offer the best performance. With a large or particularly intensive Rust server, every bit of available CPU power counts, so it would be best to choose one of those two options.

Re: Rust Virtual Server
Ok, well I've already ordered a four core VDS and upped it to 8GB of RAM, and so far it's running really well. I have it set to restart 4 times per day to clear the memory leak issue.
My goal is to eventually run a dedicated server, but the finances aren't there yet. And in order to have a standalone game server with those specs, I'd be looking at an extra $20 a month.
I'll take my chances for now with the VDS, as I'm hoping the fact that the cores are dedicated will be sufficient at this point in time.
Thanks for your feedback, and as soon as I can afford a dedicated on a monthly basis I'll be switching over.

Re: Rust Virtual Server
Also, the VDS I have is performing better than the hosted one through the previous server host I was with.
Re: Rust Virtual Server
I'm glad to hear that!
We use fast hardware for our VDSes, which helps. Some competitors actually put all their game servers on virtual machines, and we'll always beat those guys.
In the patch released yesterday, the memory usage for Rust really went down, which was nice.

Re: Rust Virtual Server
Out of curiosity, the status panel says that I have 4 CPU cores running at 2.6, would a higher clock speed be possible or would it even be a noticeable difference?
Also, would an ssd on the server end have a significant impact? Just wondering so I can plan for the future.
As I said, it runs really well, I'm just looking at smaller increments before I make the jump to dedicated.
Thanks.

Re: Rust Virtual Server
That would be the base clock of the machine, but it's possible and likely the machine is using turbo to increase those clocks. A faster core clock in general could improve performance, but it generally not the main consideration. An SSD also is generally not needed for Rust as it really isn't too disk intensive.
