Trying to figure out how to utilize my gigabit connection to download faster from our unmanaged VDS. NFO is running a full machine move with very little notice (<12 hours) and I'm concerned about any potential data loss (things happen).
Trying to move our backups to my local (~242GB) and getting 2Mb/s tops in filezilla. WinSCP via SCP / SSH won't connect.
Backups are never a bad idea, so I won't discourage that behavior. But, these machine moves that we are doing as we decommission old servers are low-risk, because the old server image will remain on the old machine for a couple of extra days. That means that if there is a problem with the move, we can bring back up the VDS on its original machine, if we need to.
The only real risk of data loss comes from the possibility that there might be a multiple-hard-drive failure during the move operations. We haven't seen that happen before as we empty a machine, but it's theoretically possible.
I'd recommend just backing up critical files right now -- the ones that you can't replace without a large amount of work -- and saving the full backup for later. If that's really not possible, please escalate your request and we should be able to delay the maintenance. We could also potentially provide another, temporary Linux VDS at the same location that you could copy your files to (using scp/rsync), through a free-trial coupon code.
Copying files through Filezilla/WinSCP tends to be slow everywhere (not just here), and I don't know why that is.
