You would need to download the file from your FTP to your machine (your desktop, for instance), edit it there, and then reupload it.
For most files, we'd generally recommend using the File manager instead, since it's fewer steps.

I'm not sure what you mean. You edit it on your client machine, and then you upload it through the FTP, replacing the original.
