E5-2697v3 vds vs E3-1270v5 dedicated server per core performance comparison

Post by GeneralDotV2 »

I'm thinking of switching from my Chicago based vds to Chicago based dedicated just so I can get a higher frequency cpu as i run game servers that sadly only utilize a single core for game processes. I just had a couple of questions first before deciding to switch to dedicated. First, how much better performance wise is the dedicated E3-1270v5 vs the vds E5-2697v3 per core. I'm also wondering if there is a way to order a dedicated server with less ram and a smaller ssd, as i don't even come close to needing 64 gb of ram, nor would I need a 1000GB ssd.

Being on your own E3-1270v5 machine would give you significantly better performance than being a VDS on an E5-2697v3, from a hardware standpoint (they are on the same bandwidth here). Partly this would come from the higher clock speed, partly from the fact that it is a later-generation CPU, partly from faster RAM, partly from the fact that there would be no cache contention with other customers, and partly from running on bare-metal instead of being virtualized. It's difficult to say how much better it would be for you, because your application's design makes a big difference, but I would conservatively expect at least a 20% advantage for the E3v5.

We have standardized hardware configurations, and in the case of these older machines, the machines are already in-place, so we can't individually downgrade (or upgrade) them.

Two more quick question. The first one, would I be able to transfer my 3 ip addresses from my Chicago vds to a Chicago dedicated server to keep the ip addresses. Next question, would virtualization be enabled on the machine so I could install and use Windows Hyper-V to create 2 virtual machines on the dedicated machine.

That would likely be possible, but you'll need to contact us directly through the support system to talk more about it.

You can do something like that if you wish, but I would advise against it if performance is critical to you. Most services support choosing the IP address and port used when they are run, so you can run multiple servers on the same OS without virtualization.
