For a little background on the move,

- We first started renting out services in Chicago in 2005. We leased space from another company briefly, then full cabinets from InterNAP* at their "CHI" PoP, which was at a Level3** datacenter.
- In 2010, we moved our cabinets from the Level3 datacenter to one run by Equinix. We still leased them through InterNAP, which had a cage at the Equinix facility. Interestingly, the building had a different landlord, another datacenter operator called Digital Realty Trust (DRT).
- When InterNAP (then called INAP) went belly-up and sold off its colo business, our business with them started going through a company called IPC, which now resold Unitas Global/PacketFabric, which in turn resold space in its cage at Equinix, which in turn leased its floor of the building from DRT.
- Starting in early 2025, we began having difficulty with remote hands tickets at the Equinix facility, because PacketFabric was in arrears to Equinix and was restricted from accessing or removing equipment -- some of our requests for assistance took a week to get special approval. This was a precarious situation to be in, and we knew we had to find another colo provider!
- It took many months to get approval to remove our equipment and arrange for the move. Finally, this month, November 2025, we finalized our move to a CoreSite facility in Chicago. Because we are direct with them, and they also own the building, we have streamlined access, shipments, remote hands, etc.
- Datacenter moves are always a huge amount of work, but we're pleased with the result. The cabinets at the old facility were from the 90s, short, thin, dirty (very odd for a datacenter, but for some reason, there was a lot of dust), poorly-lit, and difficult to work in. The new ones fix all of these problems.

* InterNAP later renamed itself Internap, then INAP, then went bankrupt and had its assets divided between other companies, including Unitas Global (later bought by PacketFabric) for the bandwidth, IPC (for resold colo services, some of which still went through UG/PF because they were in a UG/PF cage), and Evocative (for its own directly-owned colo services). A few assets were also retained by the old holding company, which has since renamed itself HorizonIQ. InterNAP no longer exists as it once did.
** Level3 was later bought by CenturyLink, which has since rebranded to Lumen.

Wow, lots of changes with providers, locations, etc.

NFO had great luck with InterNAP, is the new providers just as good?

In Chicago, InterNAP never had its own datacenters and only resold space, so we can't really compare to them directly. (They used multiple partners for this, including Level3 and Equinix.) But, in terms of comparing the space that was resold to us from Equinix versus the new facility, the new one is much better.

The previous facility was very old -- not just the cabinets, which were ancient and substandard. Their cooling infrastructure was also old and failed during a snowstorm in 2024, leading to several days of problems for us. The old building was cumbersome to access, with byzantine hallways and a freight elevator that could only be opened by security with a special ticket.

The new facility is in a new purpose-built building, with new physical infrastructure.

More broadly, we have leased cabinets from Equinix, Digital Realty Trust, and CoreSite. All are effective infrastructure providers. Equinix tends to be the most expensive, but not really the best; they have the most cumbersome ticketing processes and the least friendly security (though smart hands/remote hands staff are not unfriendly). All three operators have N+1 power, generators, 24/7 security, etc., and I would consider any of the three for new deployments, with the edge mostly going to the one with the best provider selection and lowest costs.
