Hi everyone
"I'm trying to decide between a Dedicated Server and a Virtual Dedicated Server (VDS) from NFOservers for my project, and I was hoping to get some insight into the differences. What are the main differences in performance and resource allocation between Dedicated Servers and Virtual Dedicated Servers (VDS) offered by NFOservers? Are there any specific use cases where one would be significantly better than the other?

So the short answer is, a dedicated server offers the max performance across the entire CPU. As it does not have any virtualization of cores.
A VDS has virtualization and running software to provide the experience, where a dedicated does not require software.
What kind of project are you planning on running? What kind of usage and requirements will it have?

That makes sense. Regarding the CPU, on a VDS, are the cores 'dedicated' (not shared with other users) or is there a chance of 'noisy neighbor' issues affecting my performance?
For the Dedicated servers, do I get full IPMI/KVM access to install a custom OS, or am I limited to the templates provided in the control panel?

As for the VDS all of our details are listed Here
And as far as the dedicated, you would choose the OS to be put on the machine. And then you would have access to that. We cannot offer IPMI/KVM access to our machines. For further info than this though it really would be best for you to send us a request!

A dedicated server will almost always offer better single-threaded performance, and have more memory for the same price point. It's also usually a better choice when Windows is needed, since MS charges through the nose for Windows licenses on shared hardware.
But a VDS is more flexible, since it has a free trial period, it is so easy to use, and it's easy to downgrade/upgrade/move. It also offers a lower starting price point, so it is great for running small services.
What will you be running? That really determines what you will need.
As a few examples,
- For a big new game server that is hungry on RAM and CPU (as most sandbox games are, for instance), and which may require Windows, a dedicated machine is the way to go.
- For an older game that doesn't have high resource demands, a VDS is generally best.
- For a website of pretty much any size, that can run on Linux, a VDS is usually the way to go.
- For a proxy/VPN, a VDS is the way.
- For AI or other highly-parallell/highly-threaded workload that simply wants as many CPU cores and as much memory as it can get, a high-end VDS might offer higher performance per dollar, but it's worth testing further.
