How many BF updates?

Post by beerbob »

Wondering how many people had updated their BF1942 with the new patch this month to 1.6.1 ??

I had a few friends who upgraded, but then not many servers were running it and when they tried to go back, they ended up having to reinstall everything from scratch.

any other news on this patch.
They do not say what exploits it fixes.

Thanks.

It's a small update so it likely doesn't change very much.

The patch may have something to do with the nickname buffer overflow and crash caused by arbitrary memory access in Star Wars Battlefront, which is based on the BFV engine.

It's hard to know for sure without knowing the exact nature of the bug, but exploits like these are sometimes used to crash servers later on (often, some number of weeks after the exploit is publicized, someone will develop it into a crash hack that will then be spread on the 'net).

I'd recommend upgrading at some point, but if you don't want to do it right away, there probably isn't serious harm in waiting a few days or weeks.

The bug has been publicized so it's smart to update. We updated our DCF server and have had no problems.

How has the player count been on your server- normal after the patch?

I keep scanning with 1 machine that has been updated and one that has not.
About half the servers out there running DC have been updated.
That presents a problem for players who now must choose to either play on patched or unpatched servers OR have 2 installs ( one old and one new ) to cover all bases.

Always a couple days mayhem for server owners when patches come out as I get flooded with emails and PMs about " can't connect to server-wtf.." etc.. I'm sure you all do to.... So I have always gotten into a habit of NOT upgrading immediately until the general gaming public has had time to KNOW about said updates and had time to dload , etc.
But since this is such a small patch, hopefully this will be quick for everyone.

I've seen no drop. We didn't patch til the 2nd or 3rd day. Never really disrupted things seriously. Picked up a few new players that patched early I think.
