I have downloaded and tryed to play a few demos from hltv. They arent recognized as an HL file.

What is up with this. I have a partner who has the same nfo setup as I and he has no problems viewing his demos from hltv. Please drop me a line on whats going on or if you have a suggestion. I also had him download the files and try to view the demo and he had the same problems.
Sounds like your HLTV may need to be repaired. At one point, Valve released a broken version of the HLTV that could not create demos correctly, and you may have that version. If you email us about this, we can get that fixed.
