Webhosting for a VPS game server.

Post by LigerXT5 »

I've been using NFO for the last few months. With NFO my Minecraft server more stable and reliable than on other hosts I've been with. I've been tinkering around with getting a small webserver running so players can see the Dynmaps (kinda like google maps for each game world) when one of the Minecraft server are down for maintenance or updates, along with our Stats page (funny how some people are competitive about how many kills or how much one has done compared to another player).

So far what basics I have done is about all I need, except that I would like to have a domain to use when either connecting to the server or the webpages. Not only would it look nicer to other people, but I feel that it would be a little more secure.

At this point, I'm at a brick wall until I noticed a thread, in this same forum area, about not being able to do so. You can't get the first and secondary DNSs unless you are using the webhosting addon for the vps.

I don't mind paying the $3 additional per month. The backend I'm still unaware of. The backups for the webhosting will be great, especially the MySQL backups. But how often are the backups?
If I get the webhosting for my VPS, is it on a different machine, I can move most of the info over, but moving over the database I have running on my machine (keeping things orderly at least) is unknown to me, but I believe I can find something out, as I have done with many other things since starting the VPS up a few months ago.

My Dynmaps are saved in the same directory of my current webserver setup (easy for the plugin to just save updated tiles as they are generated), if at all possible, I'd like to have the images that are generated to be on the same webserver as they are updated. If the new webserver is on a different machine, how would I go about doing this? The only thing I can think of is linking the dynmap links on the new webhost to the one on the vps via IP, which would cause a security issue.

This is currently what I have, http://74.91.123.58/ , I would be happy if I could have a real domain (not the NFO sub domain setup, looks cheap).

Even with our webhosting you wouldn't be able to use our nameservers for domains hosted on your VDS. It would only work for domains added to our system.

If/when you buy a domain you should be able to use your domain providers nameservers, though.

Backups are done on a daily basis and we keep about a months worth of backups.

Webhosting is completely separate from your VDS and don't run on your VDS.

Last time I checked, Dynmaps didn't support having an outside webserver being used for the maps, it had to be internal.

Since you've made it this far it sounds like purchasing a domain and using our domain providers nameservers would be your best bet. It shouldn't be too difficult to get that setup.

I currently do have a domain name, though it's new territory for me on majority of it.
Presume I will need to have the webhosting addon to accomplish what I need in order to use a domain?

I'm not fully certain I understood you about dynmap being internal. I do know there is two choices of running dynmap, either by itself where it runs a small webserver on a pacific host, or turn off it's webserver and have the files in the www/whatEver folder, however that only works if on the same machine. If I could link the dynmap, in either setup, without showing the IP publicly, it would be wonderful.

Yes, if you wanted to it be hosted with us you would just need to change the nameservers to NS1.nfoservers.com and NS2.nfoservers.com

Internally meaning that you can't use it on a webspace hosted on another machine. It would have to be on the same machine. The only real way this will work is if you host your domain and webserver off of your VDS along side your MC server.

However, that's more complicated and could be hard to achieve.
