just wondering

Post by Evolution »

"I dont know if we will ever need to, but i feel it will be good to know. Since we dont pay for a server stop/start script we have to sign into our box via remote desktop to start and stop servers, but if we ever were to have an admin of which we only wanted to be able to control 1 server like that, the only thing i could think of would b to create a new user account on the server box with a different password like you would if u were sharing a computer with family, are we able to do such a thing on this box?" - My Question

I sent this question into a "help!" ticket and got the following response:

"I'm not familiar with creating extra users on Windows Server for the purpose of Remote Desktop. It may require a different kind of license, that we do not provide. You may want to post on our forums at http://www.nfoservers.com/forums and a community member, off duty support tech or even John, our CEO, would be able to respond with some advice." - answered by Vanderburg

We have a virtual windows server with you guys. I didnt think to try and log in with our nfo info to this forum, so sry if theres a problem with me just creating a new account for this, also sry if this is the wrong part of the forum to post this, but looked to me like it would be fine :). Take ur time in response, like i said im not asking this for any immediate reason, just something i would like to know for future reference :) .

You can create multiple users in windows and allow them to connect to remote desktop and they would have their own environment. In theory you could create a folder that is accessible by everyone and put 1 server in there, and then create another folder with only administrator access for the rest of your servers.

While this should be possible, I would not advise it. If you have enough servers where you need multiple people managing them, you should look into a control panel. Opening up remote desktop to someone still gives them a lot of access to your machine, and if you can't trust them with your game servers, I wouldn't trust them with any other system access.

Here is an old list of free and paid control panels from 2011, most of them are still around I think.

I recommend NFOs control panel over all of those, and if you switch to a managed install you will need to re-make your servers, and you will probably lose your IPs.

Creating more actual user accounts in Windows, and allowing others to log in to them, costs money: http://www.nfoservers.com/forums/viewto ... =46&t=9218. For this reason, I do not recommend it. It is usually better to offer restricted access to each server through a control panel and 3rd party FTP service.
