VDS Pre-Sale question

Post by carloak »

Hello.

I am considering purchasing a VDS to host a game that NFO doesn't support on a managed server, so I'll have to use the "unmanaged" option. My question is will I be able to install RAdmin server on the virtual server I rent? I have paid for a RAdmin server license because I currently operate a server for this game from my home, but I need a static IP address. I know there is remote desktop protocol, but I have 2 Admins who normally have access to the host machine to assist players and RAdmin would allow me, or even you if you had need to know, to view who is or has logged in by viewing its log file.

Thank you.

I'm not familiar with Radmin, but it appears to just be a paid version of something like TeamViewer. You could use it, but I'd recommend setting those users up with a shared account on the VDS and allowing them to access it that way.

RAdmin is similar to TeamViewer but it has much better performance. It's like you are sitting at the machine; I've tried TeamViwer and there is usually a bit of lag. And you don't have to be on a list. It connects directly from the client to the server's IP address. Security is in the form of a username and password that's required each time a client logs in. A log is kept of each time a client logs in and out and any failed access attempts. Each login whether successful or not logs the IP address of the accessing client.

I'm not sure I understand what a shared account is. When I log in, I would want to be able to see if either of my ADMIN's were logged in. Also, would there be an extra fee for this shared account? This isn't a deal breaker. I just don't want any surprises.

Thanks for your quick response.

The shared account would just be a secondary account within the OS itself. Depending on your OS(I'm assuming Windows). It would just another user account which they could use to access the server, without needing to compromise your own account.

Both ways would technically work, but this way wouldn't require any third party software. Ultimately just comes down to personal preference.

I think I'll go with RAdmin. I want there to be accountability. With a shared account, I don't know which one logged on. With RAdmin I would know as it specifically shows in the RAdmin log who logged on, when and when they logged out. Don't get me wrong, I trust my ADMINs, (else they wouldn't be ADMINS), but I feel there needs to be accountability, if for no other reason, to keep them honest.

Will I have to get permission from a respondent at support@nfoservers.com email address to run RAdmin server?

You should be Ok to install that to your VDS. Since it would be unmanaged you are in full control of the OS and software on it.
