Less lag on garry's mod server

Post by xXBryanXx »

I've been a customer here for a while now, and up until this point I've always bought managed servers. They usually have zero lag (except in extreme conditions like propspam etc.).

This time, after recommendation from a friend, I purchased an unmanaged VDS. I successfully got my server running, but it is laggy as all hell. I changed the tickrate and server fps, and that helped dramatically. The server is still laggy when a lot of props are spawned, but not nearly as bad, and I would like to know what things that the managed servers have that unmanaged don't to make them less laggy.

Basically, how can I further optimize my unmanaged server to make it run better and less laggy?

I'd recommend that you start with a server.cfg from one of our servers, as that is where many key performance settings are defined. You can then experiment with different tickrates, the Windows process priority, disable the firewall, and general OS performance tweaks.

Make sure that the server is configured to run as a service and that you're not logged in through RDP while playing on it, as that can also hurt performance.
