srcds.exe freezes, then explorer, then any other program run

Post by micafire »

I have a dual core VPS currently running Garry's Mod, and it works just fine until for some reason, srcds.exe freezes and also leaves player with the disconnect message, and on RDP, I cannot close the srcds.exe command prompt, but also when I launch command prompt and run taskkill /im srcds.exe, it does say success, but srcds.exe is still there. I also run teamspeak and we can still communicate by voice.

It takes about a minute or two to wait for the server to somewhat catch up, srcds.exe closes and any program I tried to close closes, but also we lose connection to teamspeak and then reconnect, and it's all back to normal.

I need to figure out the root cause of this as it really bumps our players down drastically. I have done the following to try and fix it, but had no luck I guess...
  1. Re-install SRCDS and the GMOD content
  2. Re-install Windows server 2008
  3. Modify some cvars and priority in the process.
Any help is appreciated, I could start from sending the dump file to figuring out a good method to try and find out the cause of these lock ups.

Thank you!

This sounds like a resource problem. Are you running out of RAM or seeing all of your CPU exhausted?

Possibly, I will take notes on the performance when the server activity increases and also while it's idling. At this moment, it is zero players and it is utilizing 400 MB of RAM, with barely 1% of CPU.

I do remember it utilizing 500 MB of RAM and ~37% of CPU during 20 players.

There is still 500-600 MB of RAM available during the activity with 20 players.
