I did a search and didn't see this posted anywhere. Do you guys plan to offer Doom 3 server hosting, and if so, when? Am very satisfied with our RTCW server and hope to use you guys again for a Doom 3 server. Thanks!

The retail game can be ran as dedicated server from the command line via a bat file. Please see the following site for more information.

I am also very interested in an NFO Doom 3 server.

On the 4th I did more extensive research and found how to do it. (The batch file is just a convenient way of restarting the server, actually, which is something our systems already do -- what matters are the command line options.)
iD has not made any information official yet, of course -- individuals have simply discovered how to do it on their own. Most likely this is because the dedicated server program needs some serious work done -- it uses insane quantities of CPU power, far more than any other game we host and in complete disproportion to the gameplay (by this I mean that the multiplayer is not much different than any other deathmatch game, and yet CPU usage is very different). iD has also not yet made available a standalone dedicated server program or linux dedicated server, indicating that there is still some work left before they're comfortable with a release.
The dedicated server also requires that a CD be in the drive to run it.
We are currently experimenting with the D3 dedicated server in its current form and will post the results when we have them. From what I've seen so far, I would not be surprised if we would have to charge more for a 4 player D3 server than we do for a 20 player CS server.
In a related vein, I'm curious to hear people's opinions on the D3 multiplayer experience. I personally don't think it is much different than other DM games such as Q3 or HLDM. This is because the spookiness of the game is totally lost in the frenzy of multiplayer, as is the graphical quality -- things just move too fast for you to notice it.

wow, yeah, if theres 4 players max, then the basic server would be what? 2 players?
Hey edge, I'm planning on getting the game soon, if I ever play multiplayer (I'm don't really like deathmatch) I'll let you know how it is different, but by then other people most likley would of let you know.
Some poeople just like the better graphics, so between half-life and doom3 they would pick doom3.

I'm curious if the reason the server takes so much resources is because the engine is so inefficient. In playing the single player game, it seems to take a lot more resources than Far Cry, and Far Cry is far superior in its physics and graphics. I've been suprised at how poorly the game runs in light of the fact that you have no long distance graphics to render and the darkness should also reduce the rendering. Everyone keeps talking about what an incredible engine this is, but I have yet to see it, especially when comparing it to the Far Cry engine and what I've seen from the leaked HL2 source. Any thoughts?
